Item Details
Description
Kennedy, Jacqueline. ALS to Rex Scouten about lighting in the White House Blue Room and East Room. At the time, he was Assistant to the Chief Usher of the White House, and was later promoted to Chief Usher. Handwritten on 3 White House note sheets (one double-sided), with original envelope (transmitted to Scouten at the White House, not through the mail). Reads in full: “Mr Scouten/ Thank you so much for staying up so late last night & being such a help- I have asked Anne Lincoln to put up a message from the President & me thanking all the men who served- Do you think you could arrange with electrician- so that: Blue Room some lights on appliques can be turned on & others left off - so they are not all on same switch & the same for chandelier - so that it can be very dim - or medium- or on full force-/ The same for hall chandeliers & it should be possible to light a couple of torches without lighting all (I believe it is)/ also East room chandeliers- should be able to go from dim to medium to bright, & perhaps separately - as if they are all dim it is too dark - but if one is dim & 2 are medium- the right light can be created./ Also perhaps there are lower watt bulbs we could use in appliques & chandelier in blue Room- If so could we try it & could you tell me when they are in so I can look some night- It should always be fairly dim at night- & now that it is white - it is so much brighter - The party was beautifully done & though I know you are all exhausted it was a wonderful time for us & I should think it gave the President a few hours of feeling carefree which is the greatest gift in the world anyone can ever give to a President/ Thank you/ JBK.” 12mo. Near fine. Accompanied by: ++ Typed or printed press release announcing the official opening of the refurbished Treaty Room of the White House. June 28, 1962. [3] single-sided leaves. Bit of marginal wear, folds slightly brittle. ++ 2 b/w press photos: One of Scouten with another man, the other a group shot in front of an indoor Christmas tree at the White House. ++ [Printed invitation] Military Review Honor of Their Majesties The King and Queen of Afghanistan. Thursday, September 5, 1963. ++ Provenance: Rex Scouten Collection of White House Americana. Scouten served 10 Presidents from Truman to Clinton, including time as a Secret Service agent, Chief Usher of the White House, and White House Curator.
