Description
American Revolution
Colonial to Revolutionary War Era Corn & Grain Pounder
c. 1760-1780 French & Indian to Revolutionary War Period, Rare Wooden Corn & Grain Pounder (Mortar & Pestle Set), Very Fine.
This is a very rare, likely a quite unfamiliar item to many collectors of Revolutionary Period items... as they are so rare to have survived that most people have never seen or perhaps even heard of a corn pounder of this vintage. Only a very small number of these type of pounders have survived to present day, thus exceedingly rare and most existent are represented in institutional collections. The mortar itself stands about 18.5” tall with three supporting wrapped Iron-forged bands. The pestle/pounder came together with this mortar and it is handcrafted from a different wood, perhaps an exotic hardwood that would be better for its heavy use in constant pounding. Although the main diet for a early American soldier would have been mostly salted meat, hard bread and a bit of rum, the pounder would be the perfect thing for making cornmeal and supplementing the diet with tastier foods such as johnnycake and sweetened corn mush. Some expected cracking present, along with a small loss of wood from the bottom of the mortar, else overall in nice “museum” quality condition for a period display. (2 items)
