Description
Louisiana Figured Mahogany Armoire, c. 1830, stepped cornice, plain frieze, pair of doors, pressed brass escutcheon, beehive-turned feet with brass spherules, h. 92 in., w. 67 1/2 in., d. 27 in. Provenance: Purchased Mandeville, 1960s; conserved by Ruppert Kohlmaier, Murfee/DeBardeleben Collection, Riverview, Columbus, MS. Note: The beehive-leg design, a feature of the armoire offered here, likely originated in New Orleans during the late Federal period. Most beehive-leg armoires follow a similar pattern of highly grained veneers and the unique leg, which often terminates in a brass-ball foot. Other related armoires have been conserved by the Stromeyer and Barras Family collections.Ref.: Furnishing Louisiana: Creole and Acadian Furniture, 1735-1835. This Historic New Orleans Collection: 2010. P. 125, 141.
