Description
Bed warmer. Thick brass or bronze. All hand hammered and tooled. Separately attached wrought iron handle. Twisted stem. Pierced and die cut designs and decorations on the top lid, including the four Suits of Cards (Spade, Diamond, Heart and Clubs), as well as a star and Fleur-de-Lis (Lilly) flowers. A slot at the end of the handle, which would be used for a longer, wooden dowel handle which would make it easier to handle when hot. A wire attachment at the end of the handle, where a dowel would be attached - used for hanging on the wall. French, most likely from the Northern provinces - Normandy or Brittany, circa mid/late 1700's. Measurements: Approx. 24" long with handle, 11" diameter across, 4.5" high; Weighs about 4 lbs. or 1814 grams (1.814 kg). Bed warmers were a common household item before the invention of rubber (which gradually replaced them with hot water bottles), filled with hot coals and used under the covers to heat the bed during cold winter nights. *** Please keep in mind that we have a professional and cost-effective in-house shipping service.
