Hendra Aprida Gunawan (1918-1983)
Born in Bandung, West Java in Indonesia, Hendra Gunawan studied under the guidance of Wahdi Sumanta. In his early years he devoted himself first to drawing and then auto-didactically to sculpture from 1938. Gunawan has become known for his colorful and expressive caricatures. As he was revolutionary minded and fought for the independence of Indonesia, his works were not presented to the public for decades. In 1950 he founded the group ‘Kelompok Lima Brandung’ (The Bandung Group of Five) together with Affandi, Barli, Sudarso and Wahdi. During the Japanese invasion, he taught painting and sculpture and painted in secret. In 1965 he was imprisoned; after his release in 1978 he moved to Bali. Works by Gunawan are in major museum collections, including the Singapore Art Museum and the Neka Art Museum in Bali. (cko)
