Description
Japanese, late 19th century. A carved boxwood netsuke, round in form, and intricately carved in neoclassical motifs, with a flowering basket to one side, and musical instruments to the other, with a flower border around the edge. Apparently unmarked. Height 2.125", width 2", depth 1". Note: The netsuke was developed in the 17th century as an anchor for an inrô - a hanging pouch to carry small items - while wearing a kimono. In the late 19th century, netsuke became popular as fashionable objects with westerners. With its neoclassical theme, this piece was likely designed for the western market.
