Late 19th century, 145 x 108 cm, East Caucasus, Kuba region

Usually woven in small formats, vagirehs are rug samplers displaying a compilation of different regional motifs and designs drawn to their original scale. The resulting potpourri of forms and colours did not constitute a coherent composition, but offered an ideal template for the weavers in a workshop. Vagirehs were also presented to potential clients to demonstrate a workshop’s design repertoire. Woven in designs and colours typical of Zeikhur, this example from the Kuba region has survived in good condition. Original finishes all around, only slight signs of age.
