Description
Early 19th century, Britain and West Turkestan
As part of a fascination with the East and a revived interest in Oriental rugs in Europe during the second half of the 19th century, it became fashionable to upholster seating furniture in sections of Turkmen rugs which had been cut up for the purpose. The exotic flair of such furniture demonstrated a cosmopolitan attitude on the part of the owners. This historicist oak chair – a replica emulating the 17th century style – has a seat and back covered in three fragments of an early Tekke main carpet. – Good condition.
