DESCRIPTION: Edmund Darch Lewis (American, 1835-1910). Oil on canvas laid on masonite. "View of the Susquehanna River" . In heavy gilt wooden frame with retrofitted inner frame. Signed in lower left corner and date 1872. One of the most prolific and commercially successful American landscape painters of the late nineteenth century, Edmund Darch Lewis rendered crisply realistic images of shorelines, waterways, and rural scenes in the northeast that received popular acclaim during his era. Lewis was born in Philadelphia. At age fifteen, he began to study art, enrolling in a private class with Paul Weber. His initial works were landscapes and marine views, focusing on the Lehigh, Susquehana, and Wissahickon Rivers of Pennsylvania. MEASUREMENTS: 22-3/4" x 37". Overall with frame: 36" x 50". CONDITION: Several areas of old restoration and inpainting. Hot glue residue to interior frame, evident from reverse. Repairs and possible regilding to frame. Minor wear to surface consistent with age, storage, and display.
