Description
Rome, Imperial period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A silver ring with an oval setting and, attached, two thin sheets of gold with repousse designs of stylized human figures. Rings had an important place in Roman society, and were often worn to signify commitments, familial and religious. They also had a legal component, serving in engagement as a pledge to marry, and the party who broke the contract was liable to return it. Rings seem especially significant after the introduction of Christianity into the Roman world. Size: 0.9" W (2.3 cm), ring size 5.5.
