Ancient Roman, Bronze Theatre Mask of Actor c.1st-2nd century AD. Size 47 x 36 x 40 mm, rare typeMouth agape, likely from a furniture fitting or Use as a Water/Wine Spout, remains of two soldering adhesions. Used as a spout on a vessel so that the water or wine would flow from the mouthReference: Mills Celtic & Roman Artefacts R370. States: “Another bronze spout, found near Harlow in essex… would also have been attached to a bronze vessel. It represents a comic actor’s theatre mask, with a wide-open mouth, a snub nose, and a heavy brow. This is a caricature of a slave (a character in contemporary comedy). Other representations of theatre masks include tragic and satyr forms.” Nigels price in the year 2000 was £425. Provenance: ex Montana Collection prior to being a Washington DC Collection
