Description
Khmer, 12th century AD. A sandstone carving of Skanda, Hindu god of war, seated on a peacock, legs crossed and holding a lotus flower in right hand at chest; elongated ears with earrings and wearing a crown; standing figure to right wearing a crown and loin cloth and holding a parasol over Skanda; mounted on a custom-made stand. For a similar example see the carving at Bannteay Samre temple, Angkor Wat, Cambodia. 12.9 kg, 37cm including stand (14.5"). From an important London collection, acquired in the 1990s.
