Description
6th century AD. A silver-gilt openwork reinforcing mount for the mouth of a sword's scabbard, of Menghin's Typ Högom-Selmeston with running guilloche and ribbed lateral flanges curving to each end; to the lower edge, two addorsed Style I profile heads with curved three-band hair, keyhole panels and arms extending to the rear to grasp a three-band arc extending from a central omega-shaped element. See Menghin, W. Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 1983, p.96. Accompanied by an Art Loss Register certificate. 30 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). Property of a London collector; acquired in the 1960s. Accompanied by a positive X-Ray Fluorescence metal analysis certificate. Scabbard plaques of this form are found mainly in southern England and the Baltic rim, with outliers in Central Europe.
