Description
Apulian, 5th-3rd century BC. A ceramic blackware jar with narrow base, flared rim; frieze of reserved nude male figures with sgrafitto detailing depicting the labours of Herakles (Hercules) including the Cretan bull and the Nemean lion. 145 grams, 10cm (4 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his grandfather in the 1920s; thence by descent.
