Description
American Massachusetts mahogany Queen Ann Tea Table or Breakfast Table of diminutive proportions with original top. Likely Salem, Massachusetts. Circa 1740. Constructed of choice, dense, island mahogany. Having round top with book matched leaves, graceful arched apron, cabriole legs terminating in pad feet. Having secondary wood of flame birch on frame support along with some pine. Dimensions with leaves open- 32-1/2" x 33". Height- 27-1/2". Some minor surface scratches on top. Four later pegs to secure top to base. Approx. 5/8" of one foot replaced. Hinges have been moved and repositioned during the history of the table but appear to be the original hinges. Center board has two small strips approximately 1/2" each along rule joint which may explain the repositioning of the hinges. Red gummed label on bottom of leaf (circa 1900) says SALEM FURNITURE R.S. STEARNS from W.P. S. STEARNS. One return on the apron is replaced, the other three are original.
