Description
"The Leopoldina, Empress Consort of Brazil", a fourteen-karat white gold, diamond and aquamarine pendant, set with a central pear-cut aquamarine, weighing approximately 35.81 carats, set in a frame above a large bouquet of flowers and crested en suite, accented by nine round brilliant-cut diamonds totaling approximately 1.13 carats, F-G color, VVS2-VS1 clarity, size 1" x 2", 24.0 grams total weight. Maria Leopoldina of Austria (1797-1826) was born Archduchess Hapsburg of Austria, and brought up under the principles of discipline, piety and duty. She became the wife of Pedro of Braganza, heir to the throne of Portugal, and the couple were sent to rule Brazil as regents. She was known for her charitable works and her promotion of education for women. In Brazil, she developed a life-long passion for mineralogy. Events in Portugal forced the couple to choose either the old world or new, and they chose to become the Emperor and Empress Consort of Brazil. She had the power to sign for her husband in his absence, and thus one kingdom was traded for another on authority resting in a woman's hands.
