Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. This terracotta platform figure depicts a man wearing a headdress lying down inside of a small roofed structure. This figure comes to us from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition and would have been placed inside of the tomb, facing outward from the walls towards the human remains within, as if in conversation. All Nayarit figures are made from the applique technique and painted with reds, whites, blacks, and sometimes yellow; this figure has the remains of what seems to have been red paint, especially on the headdress. Size: 3" L x 3" W x 4.5" H (7.6 cm x 7.6 cm x 11.4 cm)
