Item Details
Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, ca. 712 to 332 BCE. A finely gessoed and carved wooden uraeus, a representation of the sacred serpent worn on the headdresses of Egyptian deities and sovereigns. Some white pigment remains, with the head and solar disk shapes very clear. Uraei come from the symbolism of the goddess Wadjet, who was the patroness of the Nile Delta and was often depicted as a cobra; her place on a crown encircling the head emphasized her protection over a pharaoh who sought to rule her land. A special example, replete with carefully gessoed details in deep red, cream, and black hues. Custom stand. Size: 1.25" W x 4.875" H (3.2 cm x 12.4 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on stand

Provenance: Ex-Private Orange County, CA collection
