Note: Quetzaltenango, Guatemala's second largest city, was the capital of the independent state of Los Altos from 1838-1840. Originally a Mayan city named Xelaju, it is believed to have been over 300 years old when the Spanish first arrived in the 16th c. The ruthless Spanish Conquistador Pedro de Alvarado came to Guatemala after conquering Cuba, and Mexico with Cortes. Known for his cruel treatment of native peoples, Alvarado conquered the city, killed its king and renamed the city Quetzaltenago.
