Description
The Hall of 33 Bays in Fukagawa (Fukagawa - Sanjusangendo深川三十三間堂). Original color woodblock print from the series Meisho Edo hyakkei (“100 Famous Views of Edo“), published 1857, 8th month. Signed: Hiroshige ga. Publisher: Uoya Eikichi. Censor seal: Aratame and seal date.
The view of the long-stretched Sanjusangendo appears quite simple on the first glance; if one however knows the purpose of the building, then the impression changes rapidly. The hall served as a shooting range for bowmen and Hiroshige knew with great skill how to convey the incredible length of of the roofed shooting stand and speed of zinging arrows to the observer. In the course of Meiji restoration and concomitant abolition of the Samurai class, the hall was torn down in 1872.
