Item Details
Description
Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden female maternity figure created by a Kongo sculptor. A fine example displaying a characteristic emphasis on an enlarged head, wide-eyed expression with bold features, and tall headdress. The piece pays homage to the fertility of the female figure, as she sits in the nude upon an integral base with crossed legs, sweetly holding a child across her lap. The craftsmanship demonstrates a keen attention to details as demonstrated by the incised scarifications on the chest and back. Gorgeous patina from years of handling! Size: 3" L x 3.75" W x 12.75" H (7.6 cm x 9.5 cm x 32.4 cm).
