Item Details
Description
Byzantine period, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. A very fine bone hairpin carved with large Christian cross at the top surmounting another smaller cross just below, small crown-like object above. Crosses at this time had yet to take their asymmetrical form that we see in modern "Latin (or Roman)" crosses of today where the horizontal bar is above the midpoint of the upper support. The entire hairpin has now developed a wonderful medium brown patina. Custom stand. Size: 5.5" H (14 cm)
