Description
A RARE AND IMPORTANT TORAH SHIELD. Poland, c. 1817. Chased with two curtains surrounding an applied Decalogue, two pillars on which each stands a outwardly facing lion. Further decorated with flowers, birds, snakes and an applied crown. The top engraved with a “Shiviti” and the bottom cartouche engraved with dedication from the Shamashim (servants) of the Chevra Kadischa (Burial Society). Fitted with rotating wheel on which is described specific holiday of usage. An almost identical shield can be found in the catalog of the Israel Museum, Stieglitz collection, page 24. The artist is stated to be Mordechai Zoref. 11.2” tall.
