Description
Early 19th c pair of American portraits of Dr. John Miller (1760-1842) and his wife Elizabeth (Smith) (1760-1832). Dr. Miller was an early settler and pioneering physician in the Plattsburgh, NY area after the revolutionary war as well as a prominent farmer there. He traveled the area on horseback to attend to the widely dispersed farming families. In the portrait Dr. Miller is dressed in a period suit and is holding a book labeled "Dr. J Miller, Plattsburgh", in her portrait, Elizabeth Miller wears a black dress and white lace bonnet. Oil on canvas, unsigned. Pictures appx 37 1/4"h x 32"w; Frames appx 40 1/2"h x 35"w.
