Description
16th c Book of heraldic achievements (a coat of arms complete with crest, motto and all accoutrements that have been granted) with more than 100 illustrated in watercolor, titled "Ornaments, A.V. de Musi, c 1520", (Agostino Veneziano de Musi [1490-1540]), compiled and rebound in the early 20th c by Orra Eugene Monnette, founder of Bank of America. Each original sheet with colored achievement affixed to a page. Most original sheets are vellum, many annotated with the name of the owner of the coat of arms. Includes two letters, one in French dated 1752 from a heraldic scholar to a patron featuring a coat of arms and its antecedents, another in Latin regarding a coat of arms with the date 1559. Two loose two-sided original leaves featuring the descent of a coat of arms from 1333 to 1379. Many achievements annotated with family names and dates. Coats of arms are displayed in full color, a rare example of their actual "tinctures", and are of various nationalities including French and German. This important study in heraldry is from the library of Orra E Monnette (1873-1936), founder of the Bank of America. Affixed to a page is the original shipping label from Monnette's purchase of the original volume from Davis & Orioli booksellers in London, c 1930. The modern binding is of leather and buckram with "Ornaments", "A.V. de Musi", "c 1520" and "Library of Orra E Monnette" in gilt on the spine, and with a bookplate affixed to inside cover with the Monnet coat of arms and "Orra Eugene Monnette".
