Sister Gertrude Morgan. Mary And Martha Encounter The Risen Lord. Signed and titled. Tempura and watercolor on cardstock. The Sister Gertrude Morgan painting: it portrays Mary Magdalene and what the Bible calls “the other Mary”, the blue and red figures, encountering the Risen Lord, the white figure, as described in Matthew 28:9. She has copied the whole of Matthew 28 into the bottom right quadrant of the painting to help communicate her message. Notice the brown airplane she put in the top right corner of the painting, which hearkens back to her “Jesus is my airplane” motif. Provenance: Herbert W. Hemphill. Exhibited in Detroit in the 1980’s. Purchased from Ricco Maresca Gallery in 1990. Image is 18.5”w x 12”h.
