Description
Outstanding and Very Rare Stoneware Lion Doorstop with Cobalt and Albany Slip Decoration, attributed to A.P. Donaghho, Parkersburg, WV, late 19th century, molded figure of a lion reclining atop a rectangular base, the surface covered in Bristol slip and decorated with cobalt daubs around the base and applied to the tail, along with Albany slip to the face and mane. Hand-incised details to face, mane, and paws. Illegible pencil inscription on underside. Excellent form with strong decoration. Figural objects produced at Alexander P. Donaghho's Parkersburg stoneware manufactory are considered highly unusual. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased decades ago by the consignor. This lion was found in the same house in Parkersburg as the signed A.P. Donaghho spaniel in this auction, located just one block from the pottery. Excellent condition with a minor chip to one corner, two shallow in-the-firing chips to underside, and a minor chip to underside at edge. L 10" ; W 5 3/4".
