Scarce Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Stenciled Deer Decoration, Stamped "J.C. WAELDE. / NORTH.BAY.", New York State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with stenciled design of a standing deer, applied with a sponge. Sponge-decorated ground below. Decorated at the shoulder with a slip-trailed "2", accented with stripes above and below. Brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A desirable North Bay figural motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago; Exhibited at the Museum of American Folk Art in "The Pottery of State", April 18 - June 2, 1974. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with some staining and a few glazed-over, in-the-firing lines to base area.
