Description
Silver presentation pitcher with ornate repousse decoration of two views of a European village surrounding a central medallion and foliate rim. The presentation reads, "Presented to / Bro John Bell / by members of / Oriental Lodge No. 144 / F & A.M. / San Francisco, Cal. Oct 13th 1866". By Vanderslice & Co., active 1858-1908, San Francisco. The Daily Alta, October 17, 1866, "On Saturday evening last the members of Oriental Lodge, of F. and A.M. presented John Bell, Esq of the firm Kennedy and Bell, with a massive silver pitcher and silver goblets. The gift was bestowed at this time for the reason that the recipient is about leaving our State on a visit to the home of his nativity." The Freemason lodge, Oriental Lodge No. 144, was formed on May 10, 1861 and continued to grow in members. In 2000 the name was changed to Phoenix Lodge No. 144. Past members have included Thomas Starr King, Thomas Hill, Timothy Hopkins, Edward John Smith, Henry Newhall and others.
