Description
Boston. after J.W. Hill. Hand-colored engraving. Boston: C. Mottram, 1857. 28 1/2 x 41 1/2 inches visible, 32 1/2 x 45 1/2 inches framed. The Clipper ship in the foreground is the Nightengale, built in Portsmouth in the height of Clipper Ship ascendency. Shortly thereafter, steam packets rendered all such Clippers obscelete. She was once boarded for inspection by Queen Victoria. The paddle wheel steamer is one of Cunarders, which were the first scheduled steam ship packets running between the U.S. and England.
