Item Details
Description
Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A round, conical cross-section of bronze to serve as a weight with a thin incised line decoration of a large Byzantine cross, the Roman numeral III on either side of the cross, two smaller crosses, and a line demarcating the bottom of the design. Weights and measures were a part of the Roman system that the Byzantines maintained, and bureaucratic officials within the government were charged with doing so. These weights were primarily bronze, glass, and lead. The shape of this one - also called a "truncated sphere" - helps to date it. Size: 1.75" W (4.4 cm)
