Description
Selection of nine documents, some unrelated, but two related to church, the first being a letter of support to a female missionary candidate in the late 19th century and another being a pastor's complaint filed in November of 1846 against a man "unchristian conduct" for choking his wife ?until she was black as a tea kettle" and pulling her hair out of her head. Also included is a list of items sold May 16, 1860, written on the verso of a colorful billhead. Items listed include statues of saints Agatha, George, Lucia, Apostles, Madonna, John, Augustine, Mark and Thomas. In a 2 pp, 5" x 9", March 29, 1887, ALS, Connecticut Congregational Minister A. Hall encourages a female missionary hopeful. In part, "I see no reason why you could not be useful as a missionary as well as others who go. I do not see any peculiarity in your case ? in character, I mean & if you state your circumstances fully, as of course you would, age, education, etc & you are accepted, I don?t see why the door of usefulness is not open to you as widely & as properly as to any other person. As to age ? you ought to have 30 or 40 years of vigor before you now. The proper thing to do is to apply & the committees at Boston ought to be abundantly able to decide wisely on so plain a case as yours. I am glad you have so great an interest in the Master?s Kingdom & hope you will find an open door of usefulness in some field? We have a good church & plenty of heathen all around it & no excuse for idleness. I hope I shall be a time Pastor to the Ch[urch] & an Evangelist to all outside. Very truly, A Hall"Folds, expected toning and a couple chips, affecting nothing. Also includes an early Baptismal prayer. One page, approximately 5" x 8", autograph document signed of a Baptism prayer signed by Edge Williams.
