Description:
Autograph letter signed by Holton, in ink, one page, on sheet of letterhead with his Manhattan Beach address crossed out, and new Santa Cruz address written in. With hand-colored ink drawing self-portrait of Horton riding a donkey, brandishing a switch, or perhaps a lariat. With envelope addressed by Holtan on which is another self-portrait, of him holding a pen, uncolored. Letter is 28x21.5 cm (11x8½").
Charming illustrated letter by the Canadian-born artist and illustrator who contributed to many periodicals in the 1960s and beyond, including the politically-charged Ramparts. The present letter, in which he orders Maynard Geiger's "Franciscan Missionaries in Hispanic California" and Benjamin Harrison's "Fortune Favors the Brave: The Life and Times of H[orace] Bell," reflects his interest in California history.
