Ancient Roman Bronze Cabriole Leg Ram Form
Ancient Roman Bronze Cabriole Leg Ram Form
Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A small bronze cabriole leg, one of the four vertical supports for furniture curved in mirrored convex and concave arcs and in the shape of a ram, with the foot as a hoof and the top as a horned head. A tang-like projection from the back suggests that it fitted into a larger and sturdier piece of wood or other material to support the full body and weight of the furniture (and anyone sitting on it). This fanciful detail would have called to mind Faunus, the rustic god of mountains, wild lands, and music. Size: 1.4" W x 2.8" H (3.6 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Brand Collection, Philadelphia, PA
