Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, or F. Scott Fitzgerald was an American novelist and short story writer, whose works are considered the exemplary writings of the Jazz Age. His best known novel is The Great Gatsby, concerning the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and painting a unique portrait of the Roaring 20's.
Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist, short story writer, and journalist. He became well known for his understated style which had a strong influence on 20th century writing. In addition to his writing many American classics, he was also well known for his adventurous lifestyle and public persona. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms (1929).
Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American writer who is today considered both the "greatest American humorist of his age" and one of the fathers of American literature. He is best known for his novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and and its sequel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
William Faulkner was an American writer primarily known for his novels and short stories. Faulkner is one of the most celebrated writers in American literature, particularly of Southern literature. The Sound and the Fury is one of his best known novels and employs a number of narrative styles, including the technique known as stream-of-consciousness.
Nathaniel Hawthorne was a 19th century American novelist, Dark Romantic, and short story writer. Much of his work centers on New England, inspired by the strict Puritan society in that region. The Scarlet Letter, his best known work, tells the story of Hester Prynne, a woman condemned by her Puritan neighbors for conceiving a daughter through an affair.
Herman Melville was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period during the 19th century. Moby Dick is his best known work, telling the tale of Captain Ahab's obsessive quest for revenge on a white whale. It is quoted as "the greatest book of the sea ever written".
