Pair 1919 Italian Watercolors / Gouache - WWI Soldiers

Description

Europe, Italy, ca. 1919 CE. A pair of signed Italian watercolor and gouache paintings depicting World War I soldiers. The first features a single soldier who proudly stands and presents his weapon paying respect to a monument dedicated to the soldiers of the Battle of Novara (1849) at Sforza while a vision of the historic battle takes place beyond. Note the artist made wonderful use of aerial perspective by delineating the foreground vividly while creating a blurred mirage-like rendering of the soldiers fighting on horseback in the background. This painting is nicely matted with a gold beveled inner border. Pendant to this piece is a second painting featuring a single armed World War I soldier standing in profile upon a rocky promontory, overlooking the snow-capped mountains beyond. While both paintings are signed, the signatures are difficult to decipher. Nevertheless, a special pair of paintings honoring the brave soldiers of World War I and their predecessors. Size: each painting measures ~ 15" L x 11" W (38.1 cm x 27.9 cm); 19.75" L x 15.5" W (50.2 cm x 39.4 cm) with matts
