Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1930s to 1940s CE. A charming Mexican folk art wooden tray signed "Benito Mex" on the lower right and hand-painted with six figural scenes including, from top left to right, elegantly dressed ladies beneath a tree, a gentleman arriving at a cottage, a lovely couple holding hands accompanied by a woman on horseback who is being beckoned by a male suitor on the right and another male figure on the left, a refinely dressed group surrounding a running fountain, a more pedestrian group of individuals around a well, and finally, a man in a wagon drawn by a donkey with two female onlookers, one of whom is petting the donkey's ears - all painted in a wide range of nicely muted colors against a gold-hued ground. The two handled tray possesses a lovely scalloped edge and is painted with a red and green floral motif. Size: 24.5" L x 17.75" W (62.2 cm x 45.1 cm)

Seams from the three pieces of wood used to make the base of the tray are somewhat visible. Expected surface wear, but overall very good, showing nice age.
