WWI Medal group awarded to Major J. A. Roddick, comprising Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross, British War Medal and the Victory Medal with Oak Leaf Emblem.Commissioned at the beginning of the 1st World War, Major J. A. Roddick had a distinguished war record. As a 1st Lieutenant with the Liverpool Scottish Regiment he was promoted to Temp Captain when he was mentioned in dispatches by Field Marshall Sir Douglas Haig for gallant and distinguished services in the field whilst fighting near Wieltye. On 27.8.17 he was awarded the Military cross for gallantry and devotion to duty on 31.7.17. He was wounded in the right arm, and carried this disability for the rest of his life. On 7.12.17 he was recommended for the DSO for commanding a battle near Epehy. On 8.3.21 the investiture took place ,by then he was a Major with Kings Liverpool Scottish Regiment.(A number of entries for Lt. James Albert Roddick in London Gazette. Relinquishes A/Major as no longer 2 I/C, but becomes Adjutant with rank of A/Captain on 9/4/18. Award of a DSO in addition to his earlier MC was gazetted in 5/6/19. (He and Bennett [1/5th King's Own] should really have got another MC for their defence at Limerick Post in November-December 17) Gazette of 8/7/19- A/Maj. as 2 I/C 13/West Riding R. Gazette of 17/9/19 reports him relinquishing rank of a/Major as no longer 2 I/C of 13/West Riding and in Gazette of 7/12/1921 is granted the rank of Major.)Sir Douglas Haig’s 5th Despatch (cambrai Operations), 20th February 1988East of Villers Guislain the troops holding our forward positions on the high ground were still offering a strenuous resistance to the enemy's attack on their front, at a time when large forces of German infantry had already advanced up the valley between them and Villers Guislain.South of this village a single strong point known as Limerick Post, garrisoned by troops of the 1/5th Battalion (King's Own), Royal Lancaster Regiment, and the 1/10th Battalion, Liverpool Regiment (both of the 55th Division), held out with great gallantry throughout the day, though heavily attacked.Provenance: Entered for sale by a family member.
