A Johann Kurz & Co. Silver Singing Bird Automaton Box, Hanau, Germany, late 19th/early 20th century
Marks: 925, (crescent), (crown), (J-swan-K)
7-3/4 h x 7-5/8 w x 4-3/8 d inches (19.7 x 19.4 x 11.1 cm)
The silver box adorned in repoussé putti and foliate motifs held aloft by scrolled frame to front and reverse, box surmounted by putto finial waving baton, mechanism engaged by pushing bird-shaped switch to right, ovoid lid opens and feathered mechanical bird sings and flaps wings for approximately 13 seconds before retreating back into box, the lid closing as the mechanism finishes the cycle, the whole frame raised on rectangular footed base with conforming putti and foliate motif in relief.

Very light warping and casting flaws to outer base flange, otherwise with surface scratches commensurate with age, polishing, and use. Heritage does not guarantee the working order of mechanism. Lot includes aluminum bird-form key for winding mechanism.
