Description
A polychrome feathered basket with abalone shell dangles and clam shell beads, quail topknot plume feathers embellish the rim. Typically, these “jewel baskets” as they were called by the early collectors, were created to celebrate a rite of passage, i.e., wedding, birth, funeral etc. Some were cremated at that person’s death. Hence, these beautiful baskets are quite rare and highly prized. The women who wove these baskets were held in high esteem by the tribe.
