Description
Steiff Teddy Bear with long, wavy, white mohair. He is approximately 110 years-old. A nickel plated button with no raised lettering is pegged to the left ear. He has shoe button eyes and vertically stitched brown nose. The bear is fully jointed and has wood-wool stuffing aka excelsior. He has felt padded paws and four brown stitched claws. His squeaker shown in the x-ray is inoperable.
This white mohair bear was originally owned by Florence Leasure Bovier who was born December 10, 1901. She is shown in the photograph holding the bear and is estimated to be 5-6 years old as this photo is not dated. The second photo of her is signed on the back 'Florence Marie Leasure Nov 1912 Age 10 years 11 months'. Also included is an x-ray of the bear showing the 5 joints and the inoperable noise maker.
Florence Leasure Bovier of Nichols, NY. Florence Leasure Bovier, 100, passed away September 1, 2002 at the Tioga Nursing Facility. She was born on December 10, 1901 in Nichols, a daughter of the late Eugene A. and May (Ellsworth) Leasure. She attended school in Nichols and was a graduate of the Class of 1921. Following graduation, Florence went to Lowell's Business School and worked for N.Y. Life Insurance Co. She later returned to Nichols to help her parents at the Leasure's Family Store. On January 1, 1932, Florence married Ned Bovier. Florence and Ned continued to operate the family store on Main St. for nearly 25 years. Florence was the oldest member of the Nichols United Methodist Church where she participated with the UMW. In addition, Florence was a member of the Nichols OES Chapter 175 where she held various offices including Past District Depty Grand Matron in 1945. She was one of the first girls at the age of 14 to be instructed in music by Tom Kirby. Florence later joined the Kirby Band and participated in many parades and concerts. She was a long time contributor to the Nichols News column featured in the Evening Times, sharing stories about her community. (Source: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries).
