Italy, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautiful gilded painting of the Virgin Mary, in egg tempera and gold leaf on a wood board that was painted white one the backside to help preserve the board. A half-length frontally facing depiction of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a visage that though somewhat naturalistic favors the sparse use of line, dressed in vestments of rich jewel tone blues, reds, and gold gilding, with a relatively flat halo adorned with a repeated circumscribed abstract flower motif. The artist clearly emulated the style of Byzantine icons as the artist presented the figure quite close to the picture plane, embraced a dynamic contrast between the three dimensionality of her modeled face and the flatness of her garments and halo, and embellished the painting with lustrous gilding.
