Description
This box frame, or "union case," as they were called, is an amazing example of one of the many ways gutta-percha, an early thermoplastic made from tree sap imported from Malay in the 19th century, was put to use. Inside this burgundy velvet-lined box is a hand-colored tintype of a sleeping child - who was most likely photographed deceased, a common practice in 19th-century photography. The sweet toddler's image, in the sixth plate size also common in that era, is beautifully framed in brass. Part of a collection of 19th-century photographs that came to us as part of a family collection. The brass clasp needs a bit of help to open on this case, which measures 4 by 3.25 inches, but the hinges and the outer embossed covers are in fine shape.
