PROVENANCE: Formerly in the collection of the artist Stanton Macdonald Wright (1890-1973), a close friend of Goethe.
NOTES / REFERENCES: Joseph Goethe (1912-1993). Sculptor, painter, engraver, craftsman and author. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1912, Goethe studied at the Dayton Art Institute and the Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC. By 1947 he had moved to California with a studio in Santa Monica. He was a member of the Santa Monica Art Guild. During the 1960s he lived on the Monterey Peninsula. He died in Santa Barbara, CA on Dec. 5, 1993.
