2 @ ESTHER MARSHALL SILLS CERAMIC PLATES: American studio potter, Esther Marshall Sills (1908 - 1988, America), each vintage, mid-century plate with sgraffito decoration depicting animals, 7.375"d. both etched 'SILLS' on base. BIOGRAPHY: Esther Marshall Sills was an Ohio potter associated with 'The Cleveland School' of artists, a flourishing Northeast Ohio arts community which influenced regional art between 1910 and 1960. In addition to potters, The Cleveland School also included watercolor painters, printmakers, sculptors and enamelists. The artists of the Cleveland School were involved with the founding of the Cleveland School of Art (now Cleveland Institute of Art), the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland Society of Artists, Kokoon Arts Club, and Cleveland's annual May Show. Sill's work can be found in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art (The Mary Spedding Milliken Memorial Collection, Gift of William Mathewson Milliken 1939.229).
