Item Details
Description
Babe Ruth one owner autographed baseball, signed at Dallas, Texas, July 9, 1947 (one year before Ruth died) for our consignor who has written the accompanying letter: "My Babe-Ruth-Bob Feller Baseball, As I anxiously looked over the ballroom at the Baker Hotel in Dallas on July 9, 1947, I spotted my Hero, "The Babe", My Dad and I were allowed to meet and talk to Babe Ruth, even though he appeared to be sick. When we shook hands, he was a giant with huge hands. He asked if I played baseball. "Yes, sir", I replied. Much to my surprise, he handed the baseball to me. The Babe knew how to make a 12 year old boy happy! At that time my Dad was 5th Division Commander of the American Legion of Texas. He was elected State Commander that month. Lubbock, Texas was our home town. The next Spring (1948), the Cleveland Indians and New York Giants played an exhibition game in Lubbock. A local sporting goods store (The Sports Center) sponsored an autograph session with Bob Feller. After standing in line for over two hours, I was able to get his autograph on the "Babe Ruth baseball". Seeing Babe Ruth's autograph, he remarked "the Babe was a great player". Bob Feller was the first American Legion baseball graduate enshrined in baseball's Hall of Fame, July 23, 1962. Bob Feller said, "I'm extremely proud of the trophy and I am the first Legion Baseball graduate in the Hall of Fame". I have had the baseball in my possession since 1947." (letter signed by consignor),the attached photos include Ruth appearing at an American Legion Junior game on the evening of July 10, 1947, the ball accompanied by authentication certificates: JSA James Spence Authentication #X18457, PSA/DNA Authentication, Ruth signature grade 7, overall grade 7, #AB08203 Start Price: $15,000.00
