Seth Thomas began producing metronomes in c. 1897 and continued until 1984. Most Seth Thomas metronomes have identifying marks, like a serial number or a tag. These marks help with identifying the production year, along with the paper labels on the back of the panels. This particular metronome is a rare example of an early Seth Thomas, estimated manufacture between 1897 through 1910. This delightful musical tool is all original, all of the parts appear to opperate exceptionally well and in good working condition. The solid handmade mahogany wood case has a beautiful patina with very light nicks and scratches, it has been very well-kept over the years. The patinated diamond shaped front brass plate is embossed with a relief of flowers and has "METRONOME DE MAELZEL" in the center. Along the side of the plate have written, "Hollande - Angleterre - France - Amerique - Belgique - Paris". The label, behind the front panel cover is still intact and very legible and is also rare. The verticle scale has slight ware from the pendulum and sliding weight, in overall very good condition. The beat selector and winding key function like they should and this device is amazingly in excellent condition.
