Description
A nice Mesopotamian 'Devil's Trap' or incantation bowl, c. 7th Century AD, with widely flared walls and slightly flattened bottom. The interior with Judeo-Aramaic or Syriac inscription in dark brown slip spiraling all the way to the bottom. Dia: 6 1/4 in (16 cm). Light mineral deposits throughout. The 'Devil Trap' bowl, an apotropaic device, was used to ward off evil, usually within structures. By placing it within a room the spell would serve to protect those who dwell within or visit the structure. Ex Tom Cederlind estate.
