Rago sticker verso. 10 1/2" x 13 1/2". 14 1/2" x 17 1/2" Gold frame.Joseph Stella (born Giuseppe Michele Stella, June 13, 1877 โ€“ November 5, 1946) was an Italian-born American Futurist painter best known for his depictions of industrial America, especially his images of the Brooklyn Bridge. He is also associated with the American Precisionist movement of the 1910sโ€“1940s. He was studied at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase. He later attended the Paris salon of Gertrude Stein meeting other painters. Stella befriended such other well known artists as Gino Severini, Umberto Boccioni tying in with the Futurists movement. Returning to Manhattan New York City became associated with Alfred Stieglitz, Walter Arensberg, Albert Gleizes and leader of the New York Dada Movement Marcel Duchamp. In 1913, he painted Battle of Lights, Coney Island, one of the earliest and greatest American Futurist works. The legendary Armory Show of 1913, in which he participated, provided him with greater impetus to experiment with modernist styles. Der Rosenkavalier (1914) and Spring (The Procession โ€“ A Chromatic Sensation) (1914โ€“1916) are vigorous color abstractions. With the Armory Show, Stella also became a much-talked-about figure in the New York art world.Major Works in Public Collections:Battle of Lights, Coney Island (1913): Yale University Art GalleryDer Rosenkavalier (1914): Whitney Museum of American ArtPyrotechnic Fires (1919): Museum of Fine Arts HoustonBrooklyn Bridge (1919โ€“20): Yale University Art GalleryNew York Interpreted (The Voice of the City) (1920โ€“1922): Newark MuseumFactories (1920): Museum of Modern ArtBy-Product Plants (1923โ€“1926): Chicago Art InstituteThe Amazon (1925โ€“1926): Baltimore Museum of ArtThe Virgin (1926): Brooklyn MuseumTree, Cactus, Moon (1927โ€“1928): Reynolda House Museum, North CarolinaAmerican Landscape (1929): Walker Art CenterLotus (1929): Hirshhorn MuseumFlowers, Italy (1930): Phoenix Art MuseumSmoke Stacks (1935): Indiana State University Art CollectionOld Brooklyn Bridge (1941): Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
