Domergue is well recorded for his posters of female depictions, being often compared with Toulouse-Lautrec. He regarded himself as the inventor of ‘pin-up’ images. His models came mainly from the field of theatre. As well, aristocrats like the Baroness de Rothschild commissioned portraits from him. His works had a significant influence on the fashion and beauty ideals of his time.

The painting shows craquelure and minor framing marks. The inspection under UV light reveals strokes of retouching to the margins. The varnish has been renewed. The frame shows minor traces from usage.

Jean Gabriel Domergue (1889-1962)
Born in Bordeaux, Jean Gabriel Domergue studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Since the 1920s, he focused on portrait depictions of Parisian women. He also designed clothes for fashion designers, such as Paul Poiret and Henry Marque, and created advertising posters. From 1955 to 1962, he worked as a curator at the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris. In 1911, Domergue was awarded the famous Prix de Rome.
